Ultimately I think they were a victim of circumstance. Nick’s unwillingness to commit to 4 seasons from the jump made them have to write the first two as self-contained, and so the character and relationship development took a massive hit. If they had 4 seasons planned from the go, they could’ve easily written a compelling Mako/Korra, Korra/Asami, or Mako/Asami relationship, as opposed to flip flopping across all three and making them all feel shallow
